Creative Technology - Design Challenge #9
Create a 3D Room that tells a story.
My initial impression of A-frame reminded me a lot of building in Minecraft. I decided to lean into that similarity and build my 3D room as if it were Minecraft. All the features are assembled from simple shapes, but still detailed enough that it is obvious what each item is representing. I took some inspiration for the design of the room from my life. My family always begins decorating for Christmas immediately following Halloween, so given that this project was assigned in the first week of November, it seemed like the perfect time to get into the holiday spirit.
I decided to build a simple living room on Christmas Eve. I combined a series of boxes of varying sizes to make a couch, an armchair, and a coffee table in the middle of the room. The coffee table has milk and cookies out on it waiting for Santa.
In the back corner of the room I built a Christmas tree out of simple cone stacked on top of a cylinder. More boxes surround this Christmas tree to represent presents. Wrapping paper textures are placed on each of these boxes to make them look more like Christmas presents.
Finally, along the back wall of the room I built a fireplace. It is assembled out of eight cubes, each with a brick texture on top of it. A thin box is used as a mantle. There is a 3-D model of a snow globe sitting on the mantle that I imported. Lined along the front of the mantle are three stockings, again built out of a series of boxes. In the fireplace, there is a cylinder with a wood texture on it and an orange sphere, which represent a lit fire. A yellow light source is in the hearth to create the illusion that the fire is lighting the room.
This was some of the most extensive coding I have ever done in HTML. It was certainly an interesting learning experience, which could come in handy if I ever do any web development. I am happy with how this room turned out; I was able to realize my initial design fairly successfully.
